I urge the Landmarks Preservation Commission to designate Our Lady of Loreto church at Sackman & Pacific Streets in Brooklyn as a City Landmark, and assure it the protection and future community repurposing it deserves. Created by Armezzani, Federici Co. of Paterson (NJ) in 1908, OLL is an architecturally beautiful structure of classic Renaissance style, rare if not unique in the region, with a pediment representing the miraculous ‘Translation of the House of Mary’ that is the largest work anywhere of Paterson's "sculptor laureate," Gaetano Federici.

In an area that enjoys few cultural landmarks of any kind, it reminds us of a vibrant Italian immigrant community whose legacy has no other landmark in all of Brooklyn to remember it. Its art-rich exterior, distinctive build-narrative, and deep-rooted cultural history can continue to enhance Borough, City, State and Nation. The non-profit adaptive reuse of its spacious interior can address and enrich the ongoing cultural needs of its multicultural neighborhood and anchor development through a period of rapid change.
